ChangeHasComeToAmericaIfthereisanyoneouttherewhostilldoubtsthatAmericaisaplacewhereallthingsarepossible,whostillwondersifthedreamofourfoundersisaliveinourtime,whostillquestionsthepowerofourdemocracy,tonightisyouranswerIt’stheanswertoldbylinesthatstretchedaroundschoolsandchurchesinnumbersthisnationhasneverseen,bypeoplewhowaitedthreehoursandfourhours,manyforthefirsttimeintheirlives,becausetheybelievedthatthistimemustbedifferent,thattheirvoicescouldbethatdifferenceIt’stheanswerspokenbyyoungandold,richandpoor,DemocratandRepublican,black,white,Hispanic,Asian,NativeAmerican,gay,straight,disabledandnotdisabledAmericanswhosentamessagetotheworldthatwehaveneverbeenjustacollectionofindividualsoracollectionofredstatesandbluestatesWeare,andalwayswillbe,theUnitedStatesofAmericaIt’stheanswerthatledthosewho’vebeentoldforsolongbysomanytobecynicalandfearfulanddoubtfulaboutwhatwecanachievetoputtheirhandsonthearcofhistoryandbenditoncemoretowardthehopeofabetterdayIt’sbeenalongtimecoming,buttonight,becauseofwhatwedidonthisdateinthiselectionatthisdefiningmomentchangehascometoAmericaAlittlebitearlierthisevening,IreceivedanextraordinarilygraciouscallfromSenMcCainSenMcCainfoughtlongandhardinthiscampaignAndhe’sfoughtevenlongerandharderforthecountrythathelovesHehasenduredsacrificesforAmericathatmostofuscannotbegintoimagineWearebetterofffortheservicerenderedbythisbraveandselflessleaderIcongratulatehimIcongratulateGovPalinforallthatthey’veachievedAndIlookforwardtoworkingwiththemtorenewthisnation’spromiseinthemonthsaheadIwanttothankmypartnerinthisjourney,amanwhocampaignedfromhisheart,andspokeforthemenandwomenhegrewupwithonthestreetsofScrantonandrodewithonthetrainhometoDelaware,thevicepresidentelectoftheUnitedStates,JoeBidenAndIwouldnotbestandingheretonightwithouttheunyieldingsupportofmybestfriendforthelastyearstherockofourfamily,theloveofmylife,thenation’snextfirstladyMichelleObamaSashaandMaliaIloveyoubothmorethanyoucanimagineAndyouhaveearnedthenewpuppythat’scomingwithustothenewWhiteHouseAndwhileshe’snolongerwithus,Iknowmygrandmother’swatching,alongwiththefamilythatmademewhoIamImissthemtonightIknowthatmydebttothemisbeyondmeasureTomysisterMaya,mysisterAlma,allmyotherbrothersandsisters,thankyousomuchforallthesupportthatyou’vegivenmeIamgratefultothemAndtomycampaignmanager,DavidPlouffe,theunsungheroofthiscampaign,whobuiltthebestthebestpoliticalcampaign,Ithink,inthehistoryoftheUnitedStatesofAmericaTomychiefstrategistDavidAxelrodwho’sbeenapartnerwithmeeverystepofthewayTothebestcampaignteameverassembledinthehistoryofpoliticsyoumadethishappen,andIamforevergratefulforwhatyou’vesacrificedtogetitdoneButaboveall,IwillneverforgetwhothisvictorytrulybelongstoItbelongstoyouItbelongstoyouIwasneverthelikeliestcandidateforthisofficeWedidn’tstartwithmuchmoneyormanyendorsementsOurcampaignwasnothatchedinthehallsofWashingtonItbeganinthebackyardsofDesMoinesandthelivingroomsofConcordandthefrontporchesofCharlestonItwasbuiltbyworkingmenandwomenwhodugintowhatlittlesavingstheyhadtogive$and$and$tothecauseItgrewstrengthfromtheyoungpeoplewhorejectedthemythoftheirgeneration’sapathywholefttheirhomesandtheirfamiliesforjobsthatofferedlittlepayandlesssleepItdrewstrengthfromthenotsoyoungpeoplewhobravedthebittercoldandscorchingheattoknockondoorsofperfectstrangers,andfromthemillionsofAmericanswhovolunteeredandorganizedandprovedthatmorethantwocenturieslateragovernmentofthepeople,bythepeople,andforthepeoplehasnotperishedfromtheEarthThisisyourvictoryAndIknowyoudidn’tdothisjusttowinanelectionAndIknowyoudidn’tdoitformeYoudiditbecauseyouunderstandtheenormityofthetaskthatliesaheadForevenaswecelebratetonight,weknowthechallengesthattomorrowwillbringarethegreatestofourlifetimetwowars,aplanetinperil,theworstfinancialcrisisinacenturyEvenaswestandheretonight,weknowtherearebraveAmericanswakingupinthedesertsofIraqandthemountainsofAfghanistantorisktheirlivesforusTherearemothersandfatherswhowilllieawakeafterthechildrenfallasleepandwonderhowthey’llmakethemortgageorpaytheirdoctors’billsorsaveenoughfortheirchild’scollegeeducationThere’snewenergytoharness,newjobstobecreated,newschoolstobuild,andthreatstomeet,alliancestorepairTheroadaheadwillbelongOurclimbwillbesteepWemaynotgetthereinoneyearoreveninonetermBut,America,IhaveneverbeenmorehopefulthanIamtonightthatwewillgetthereIpromiseyou,weasapeoplewillgetthereTherewillbesetbacksandfalsestartsTherearemanywhowon’tagreewitheverydecisionorpolicyImakeaspresidentAndweknowthegovernmentcan’tsolveeveryproblemButIwillalwaysbehonestwithyouaboutthechallengeswefaceIwilllistentoyou,especiallywhenwedisagreeAnd,aboveall,Iwillaskyoutojoinintheworkofremakingthisnation,theonlywayit’sbeendoneinAmericaforyearsblockbyblock,brickbybrick,callousedhandbycallousedhandWhatbeganmonthsagointhedepthsofwintercannotendonthisautumnnightThisvictoryaloneisnotthechangeweseekItisonlythechanceforustomakethatchangeAndthatcannothappenifwegobacktothewaythingswereItcan’thappenwithoutyou,withoutanewspiritofservice,anewspiritofsacrificeSoletussummonanewspiritofpatriotism,ofresponsibility,where
